The Sandhill Crane, one of the most regal birds seen on marshes and prairies throughout the Midwest, has made an impressive comeback in Iowa. Extirpated from Iowa by the mid-19th Century due largely to loss of habitat, Sandhill Cranes return to nest in Iowa in 1992 thanks to efforts to restore wetland habitats across the state. Today, they're known to nest in nearly 39 of Iowa's counties!
A big part of this successful comeback is careful monitoring of Sandhill Crane populations, and this year we're going to help! We're partnering with Bremer County Conservation Board and their intrepid volunteers to help count Sandhill Cranes at Sweet Marsh in northeast Iowa. Join us to learn about this fun bird, their habitat, and how to count them. This is sure to be a unique and fun experience! This trip is free but advanced registration is required.
