Learning more about birds and birding:
IA-Birds is an email listserv to which you can subscribe and receive reports of unusual birds around Iowa and also contribute your own sightings. This service is maintained by the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union. At this same link, you can learn about how to report your sightings to the official repository of bird records in Iowa.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has tons of neat resources for birders of all levels. One of Cornell’s projects is e-bird, an online database of sightings to which you can contribute your own reports. You can also keep your lifelists in e-bird.
